Now You Know...
The term "megachurch" - Church Growth Today (Dr. John Vaughan) was first to define a "megachurch" as a church with 2,000+ attendance and regularly popularize the terms megachurch and megachurch in print (1985 article, "The Megachurch Phenomenon", Church Growth Today newsletter). That article was later followed by "Korea's Megachurches 1945-1994" in volume 10, 1995. The newsletter was the first officially endorsed publication of the American Society for Church Growth. Originator of the term was Dr. Francis DuBose in his book,
How Churches Grow in An Urban World (1957, Broadman Press).

Compiled and published the only list of the world's 50 largest megachurches (non-Catholic); the annual lists of the 100 largest U.S. megachurches, the 100 fastest growing U.S. churches (mostly megachurches), and the annual listing of America's 50 most influential churches since 1985. He compiled and published the only list of the 500 fastest growing U.S. churches (emerging megachurches) in 1987. Since 1982 has visited global megachurches in the U.S., Istanbul (Turkey- Hagia Sophia), South Korea (14 trips), China (Shanghai), Rome, Paris, London, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Germany. He has spoken about U.S.and global megachurch trends to members of both The European Church Growth Association and the American Society for Church Growth. Visits were made to 300 U.S. and Canadian megachurches in 55 cities in 24 states and provinces in 2006-2007.
He served as a founding member, past president, founding editor of the American Society for Church Growth and was its 2006 recipient of the Donald McGavran Award. He personally visited 300 megachurches in 24 states and 60 cities in the U.S. and Canada in 2006-2007. His Church Growth Today newsletter was the adopted as the first official publication of the American Society for Church Growth and included the earliest lists of global mega-churches. He is founder of the Megachurch Research Center, The Center for the Study of Growing Churches, and Church Growth Today (America's megachurch research center since 1985). His specialty since 1985 has been U.S. and global megachurches and emerging megachurches. His consulting and seminar clients have included some of the largest and fastest growing U.S. megachurches.
He is a graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena CA), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Ft Worth TX), University of Memphis (Memphis TN) and taught in the first university chair of church growth in the U.S. where he also taught the nation's first course series Megachurches of the World. His name was one of the original two names on the national megachurch survey distributed and published by Hartford Seminary as part of the Cooperative Congregational Study. The first two national survey's in the past half century of independent (non-denominational) congregations was conducted by his office for the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (1990, 2000).

Fort Lauderdale FL - Dr. James Kennedy dies at age 76. The senior pastor and founder of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church died September 5th. The church reported 4,000 people in attendance in 2006 began in an elementary school in 1959 with 45 people. The global expansion of Evangelism Explosion (known popularly as "E.E."), launched by the pastor in 1991, is reported to have been the evangelism method that led to nearly 5 million people accepting Jesus Christ as their savior in 2006. The Coral Ridge Hour airs on more than 400 radio stations, four cable networks, and to 165 nations on Armed Forces Network. The program the 3rd most widely syndicated Christian television program available to 81% of U.S. homes each week. - Sept 6, 2007
Colorado Springs CO - New Life Church of Colorado Springs called Brad Boyd as their new pastor. According to an announcement by Brad Fallentine, Secretary-Treasurer of the church. The congregation vote approved their new pastor by a 95% approval action of the congregation formerly led by its founding pastor Dr. Ed Haggard. The new pastor, a staff member of the Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas (Dallas metro) began serving New Life immediately. - Aug 27, 2007
